Is Breakfast Really the Most Important Meal of the Day?

Breakfast is a meal that plays multiple functions in keeping your body and mind in shape.

For those of us who tend to skip breakfast simply because we are not hungry (or perhaps ate a midnight snack,) we may need some persuading as to whether breakfast really is the most important meal of the day. However, studies on the effects that eating breakfast has on the body lay down the axiom once more: yes, breakfast really is the most important meal of the day.

Lower BMI

The greatest impact that a hearty breakfast has on your body has to do with your metabolism. When you eat breakfast, you are sending a message to your body of what to expect for its energy requirements for the day. Eating a meal in the morning says, “I’m going to need to spend some energy today, so get ready.” When you don’t, your body thinks, “There’s very little food to be had. It’s best to conserve energy rather than spend today.” 

As a result, children and adolescents who skip breakfast tend to have a lower metabolism and therefore are given toward obesity. Those who do eat breakfast regularly have a higher metabolism and a lower body mass index (BMI.) 

Better Nutrition

When your body doesn’t have the fuel it needs to hit the first stretch of the day, your physical condition will suffer overall. The best kind of food to eat is that which is high in protein, fiber, and whole grains, which contain vitamin B, riboflavin, and niacin. With the energy you need, you will contribute to your body’s overall health.

Better Productivity

This directly translates into better performance during the morning or even the day. Eating breakfast has shown to result in better concentration and productivity. This applies to adults as well as to school children. Eating well and getting energized can boost one’s mood as well.

Reduce Chance of Illnesses

Sure, you might lose some energy in the morning, but that’s not much of a cost . . . or so it seems. In reality, not eating this daily meal has been linked to heart disease and diabetes.

Eating well in the morning helps your heart keep healthy and keeps your blood sugar level down. While eating breakfast won’t necessarily solve a health problem, it’s a great place to start.
